🌲 The fire district raised its tax rate. Here's what it costs
The Harris County ESD 9 board, which funds the Cy-Fair Fire Department, adopted its 2026–27 budget and a higher tax rate Sept. 24. For a median-valued homestead, the new rate adds about $1.20 a month, per the district's taxpayer impact statement. It's only the second increase in 10 years; the last was in 2019.
The reason is growth. Staffing two new fire stations this year is driving a projected shortfall, and the reserves the district built up are projected to run down in coming years.
It's also on your ballot. Three of the five board seats are up Nov. 3, with four candidates: Daniel Arizpe, incumbent Naressa MacKinnon, incumbent Cameron Dickey, and Deborah Shepler.

🌲 It's National Coffee Day. Here's where to go
The freebies. Two of the chains that opened here this year are giving away coffee today:
Tim Hortons (Barker Cypress): Rewards members get a free hot or iced coffee in any size, with no purchase needed. Claim it in the app.
Einstein Bros. Bagels (Tuckerton and Fry): A free iced coffee with any purchase, and no loyalty account required.
Dunkin': Rewards members get a free medium hot or iced coffee with any purchase, through the app.
The new spots. Seven coffee shops have opened around Cypress since January:
Mazajj Organic Coffee: Yemeni-style coffee in the old Black Rifle spot on 290. Opened Jan. 6.
Simply Brew Coffeehouse: Locally owned, in the former Daily Brew on North Eldridge. Opened Jan. 6.
Tinto's Cafe: Colombian coffee house on North Eldridge. Opened May 31.
La La Land Kind Cafe at The Boardwalk: Opened June 27.
Tim Hortons on Barker Cypress: Opened in mid-August.
Aleyotl Coffee & Bakery on Hempstead: Mexican-inspired, with a Café de Olla and a Mazapán Latte. It's in a soft opening, and the grand opening is planned for late October.

Through Saturday: Last weekend of the Waller County Fair & Rodeo
If you haven't made it out to Hempstead yet, this is your last chance. The fair wraps up Oct. 3, with rodeo, livestock shows, a carnival, and live music. Check the daily lineup before heading out. See the schedule and tickets.
Friday: Cypress Methodist's pumpkin patch opens
The "pumpkin church" on Cypress North Houston Road opens at 10 a.m. Friday and runs through Oct. 31. Entry is free, and the draws are pumpkins, homemade pumpkin bread, and plenty of photo spots. Proceeds go to the church's youth and children's missions. Plan your visit.
Saturday: Cy-Fest at Lone Star College-CyFair
The college's free fall festival is back for its 19th year, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 9191 Barker Cypress Road. Expect a pumpkin patch, a STEAM zone, bounce houses, live performances, and food trucks. Get the details.
Sunday: The Patch at Good Shepherd - Help them get setup
The pumpkin truck unloads Sunday on the front lawn of Good Shepherd Church on Cypresswood Drive, kicking off a month of pumpkins, story time, face painting, and fall photo backdrops. Proceeds benefit Boys & Girls Country in Hockley. Learn more.
