🌲 Burn Ban in Effect
The Fire Marshal's Office asked commissioners to approve a burn ban effective Sept. 17, lasting at least 90 days or until the Texas Forest Service determines drought conditions no longer exist here. The National Integrated Drought Information System has Harris County marked "abnormally dry." It applies to unincorporated Harris County, which is most of us. See The Notice.
🌲 Knife Fight in CFISD High School
One student cut another's arm with a kitchen knife during Thursday's lunch hour at Jersey Village High. CFISD police detained the student; the injured student was hospitalized as a precaution. → Here's what the district and the principal's letter confirm
🌲 Harris County finalized a 7.6% tax increase
Commissioners approved a $3.1 billion budget Thursday and finalized a 7.6% property tax increase in a 3-1 vote. The 2027 county rate is set at $0.67 per $100 of valuation, up from $0.62 last year, per agenda documents (one of the highest combined rates the county has passed)
What it costs you: about $198 more this year for the average homeowner, per estimates from the county's Office of Management and Budget. Your number depends on your taxable value and exemptions.
The county was working against a projected $181 million shortfall, which officials have attributed largely to law enforcement pay raises, rising healthcare costs, and fees for court-appointed attorneys. Learn More at Houston Public Media.
🌲 RodeoHouston broke ground on a second campus
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo broke ground Thursday on The Farm—1 million square feet on about 350 acres along Highway 288, roughly five miles south of Reliant Park. Starting with the 2029 show, all horse shows and some livestock competitions move there.
The carnival, the concerts, the Super Series, and the junior market auctions stay at Reliant Park. No taxpayer money is involved; the Rodeo says it's mostly funding the $300 million project itself. → What moves, what stays, and the first renderings

NEW: Casa Prime Premium Meats: A new meat market is opening on Fry Road this fall. The plans call for a 20-foot meat counter, a walk-in beer cooler, and a fine wine rack (sounds like the foundation of a great time if you ask me)
NEW: Midnight Cravingz — late-night specialty ice cream, opening in October at 26321 Northwest Freeway. Hours run to 1 a.m. most nights and 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday (like insomnia cookies but with ice cream)
A 24-hour golf simulator is coming to Skinner Road
Another Nine is building a private indoor golf simulator location at Cypress Village Station, near U.S. 290 and Skinner Road. The pitch is 24/7 member access, which is either very appealing or slightly alarming depending on who you live with. It's the second swing-adjacent business to land in that stretch this year, and it fits the pattern we keep noticing out here: the entertainment that's opening in Cypress is the kind you book rather than the kind you drive to.
