We have flagged this date twice, and it is finally here. Commissioners Court takes up the fiscal year 2027 tax rate this morning, and the proposal on the table is the biggest county rate increase most of us have seen.
Also on the docket: Memorial Hermann Cypress topped out its new patient tower, Precinct 4 had a busy weekend, and Friday is the 25th anniversary of September 11.

The county tax vote is this morning. Here's what it costs.
Harris County Commissioners Court meets at 9 a.m. today to propose fiscal year 2027 tax rates, and this is the one that lands on your bill. The proposal moves the county rate from 62 cents to 68 cents per $100 of valuation. On a home appraised at $400,000 with a homestead exemption, ABC13 puts the increase at about $226 a year. Memorial Hermann Cypress topped out its new tower
The last beam went up on the North Tower at Memorial Hermann Cypress on September 2, which is the point in a construction project where you can finally see the shape of the thing. It is the centerpiece of a $277.5 million campus expansion that broke ground in fall 2025. When it opens, it adds 58 inpatient beds, an expanded emergency center, additional operating rooms, an inpatient dialysis center, TIRR Memorial Hermann inpatient rehab, and expanded pharmacy, lab, and sterile processing.
The rehab piece is the part worth noticing. TIRR is where people in this region go after a stroke or a serious injury, and having those beds in Cypress means not driving to the Medical Center for months of appointments.
"Our new patient tower represents a bold investment in the future of healthcare for our region," said Marci Holub, vice president of operations at Memorial Hermann Cypress.
Two open Precinct 4 cases, and one of them needs your eyes
A deputy was assaulted while serving a warrant. Constable Precinct 4 deputies went to the 9400 block of Crystal Cove Circle in Charterwood on the night of Thursday, September 4, to serve an assault warrant. According to Constable Mark Herman, the man they came for physically attacked one of the deputies during the arrest. He was taken into custody and now faces an additional felony charge—assault on a public servant is a third-degree felony in Texas.
And Precinct 4 is still looking for a second suspect in an Ulta theft. Two women left the Ulta Beauty in the 28700 block of Northwest Freeway on August 30 with about $3,936 in merchandise. One has been identified, with charges pending. The second has not. Investigators describe her as a Black female wearing a black Nike jacket, black leggings, and black slide-style shoes. Taco Palenque is taking the old Panera on 290: The Laredo-founded Fresh Mex chain filed to renovate the former Panera Bread at 26003 Northwest Freeway, 4,000 square feet, a $550,000 build, with completion listed as October 1. It would be the fourth in the Houston area. Many Taco Palenque locations run 24 hours, though the company has not said whether this one will.
Culver's filed for Fry Road: State construction documents show a 4,393-square-foot ground-up restaurant with a drive-thru at 9265 Fry Road, a $1.85 million build. Construction starts September 21 and is scheduled to wrap June 25, 2027, so figure an opening sometime after that. It would be the first Culver's in Cypress proper. See the filing coverage
Huey Magoo's is coming to Barker Cypress: Chicken tender people, this one's for you. A permit filed with the state on August 28 shows Huey Magoo's building out a 2,444-square-foot space at 11430 Barker Cypress Road, in the Barker Cypress Retail Center. 34 seats, a full commercial kitchen, and a $350,000 build.
Nordstrom Rack is coming to Dunham Pointe
We are getting a Nordstrom Rack! The company announced a 25,000-square-foot store at Dunham Pointe, at Highway 290 and Mason Road, opening in fall 2027. That is a long runway, and it says something about how Trademark Property Company is filling that center. "Nordstrom Rack is a seamless addition to the tenant mix we are curating for the property," said Daniel Goldware, the company's senior vice president of leasing. Read the announcement
