Harris County Commissioners Court took up the fiscal year 2027 budget and tax rates on Tuesday, September 8. Nearly 200 people signed up to speak. After a full day of debate, the court voted 3-2 to advance a combined rate of about $0.67 per $100 of valuation—up from the current $0.6241, and slightly below the $0.68177 in the original proposal.
Commissioners pushed formal adoption to September 17, and that day they made it final. The tax rate passed 3-1. Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey voted no, and County Judge Lina Hidalgo stepped out before the vote, calling her absence symbolic and the budget unsustainable. The $3.09 billion budget passed 3-2, with both of them voting no. The new rates take effect when the county's fiscal year starts October 1.
