Home Insurance Rates Are Spiking in Cy-Fair

🔺 Texas premiums averaged a 23% jump from 2022 to 2023, and Harris county has seen the biggest hike— 28%. The highest state to jump in the U.S., as insurers reduce coverage due to extreme weather risk. Cy-Fair residents, especially near Moore Elementary, are feeling the impact, even if they’ve never filed claims. Here’s why:
High-risk zone: Frequent floods, freezes, and hurricanes drive up costs. (We’ve had all of these.)
Policy pullouts: Major insurers like Hippo are exiting the Texas market. (Less competition for insurance companies, also means they can charge more).
Rate hikes unchecked: Texas allows insurers to raise rates without prior approval—none of the 2,300+ filings in 2024 were denied. 🥲
New legislation: HB 2067 (effective Jan 1) will require insurers to explain non-renewals (mmmk), but won’t limit premium hikes (so not exactly a win for us homeowners.)
Industry stress: Even giants like USAA reported losses; some companies are limiting or dropping policies to keep out of the red.
Future outlook: Rising risks could add $15K+ to homeownership costs. And Cypress already has high property taxes in most of its neighborhoods. Experts urge improved flood mapping and infrastructure planning.

Strap yourselves in kids… we’re getting a new bookstore!
So that sad shell where Party City used to reside (in the Fairfield Town Center) is getting a major makeover. The folks over at Books-A-Million have filed the paperwork and are set to start construction on August 11th with completion in early November. This will be a giant 15,000 square foot book store rivaling anything I’ve seen since Hastings (anyone remember those?).

This isn’t “local” but all the locals love it… Including me.
I buy from this sale, Every. Single. Year and it saves me a ton. The tickets are typically $60 but during certain sales (like this one) they mark them down to $35 for adults. If you’ve never been to Santa’s Wonderland please give it a try, its a bit of a drive about 50 mins from Cypress, but so much fun. Live music, shops, rides, food and so many lights.
