A major west Cypress mobility project is moving from years of planning toward construction.

Harris County MUD 501 shared an update on the Harris County MUD 500 Greenhouse Road/Union Pacific Railroad underpass project, which would extend Greenhouse Road north of Mound Road to connect with U.S. 290 and Skinner Road. The project includes a roadway underpass, a dedicated pedestrian trail, a stormwater pump station, and replacement of part of the existing U.S. 290 bridge over Skinner Road. MUD 500 said design, land acquisition, and utility relocations were completed in late 2025, and TxDOT awarded the construction contract to Harper Brothers on Feb. 28, 2026. Construction is anticipated to begin this summer and continue through late 2029 or early 2030.

For Cypress residents, this is not just another road project. The Greenhouse/Skinner connection could change how drivers move between neighborhoods north and south of U.S. 290, especially around Towne Lake and nearby west Cypress communities. The update also ties the project to emergency response, noting that space was preserved for a planned Harris County ESD 9 fire station near Greenhouse Road and Mound Road.

The project is also a reminder of how complicated mobility work can be in this part of Cypress, where rail lines, highway infrastructure, drainage needs, and fast-growing neighborhoods all meet in the same corridor. The likely tradeoff is familiar: years of construction inconvenience for a connection that local drivers have wanted for a long time.
