Saving on gas + groceries 🛒⛽️

For those of you who didn’t read the ‘About Me’ page, I am a financial writer. That being said, I thought I’d do something a bit differently today by sharing some money insight that would be great for the locals as well.

Here’s the deal guys, inflation is here and the cost of goods are rising. The CPI report just dropped for March and the thing I noticed was the groceries went up! Gas didn’t, however, it’s notorious to rise during the summer months (so it’s coming).

1. I shaved 24% off my grocery bill ($200+) per month by bulk shopping

If any of you shop at Costco congrats you’re already on it. If you’re not this may be your way to save. I traditionally shop at either Kroger or H-E-B, but lately I noticed my bill was climbing for the items I buy regularly. I spend between $180-$200 each week. Lately that’s been around $210-$220. Thats about $840-$850 per month.

So I did a little experiment. I went all in on Costco. My total for a months worth of groceries —> $632. 😎

Here’s another insight to that —> Bulk mitigates the effects of inflation.

  1. Buying now in larger quantities locks in today's price before the cost increases. (If a pack of toilet paper costs $10 today and inflation pushes it to $11 next month, that saved you 10% instantly.)

  2. Bulk lowers the cost per unit. You pay less per ounce, gallon, or item, which blunts the impact of rising prices.

  3. Lessens the exposure to volatile categories by stretching your supply over time. Things like groceries, paper goods, and cleaning supplies are more vulnerable to frequent price spikes.

2. Here are 3 easy ways to save on gas

Gas is a bit different.

I find it either has a significant jump or only slight, no in between.

Since there hasn’t been (and won’t be 🤞🏽🤞🏽) any tariffs employed on gas we may not see a huge lift but this time last year it went up about $0.20 per gallon topping out at about $3.80/gal (on regular gas) over the summer. Either way, if you’re looking for some extra ways to save these are my favorites:

  1. Costco is my first pick. Costco offers from $0.05-$0.25 per gallon LESS than competitors. With an average savings of $0.13 per gallon the savings are pretty good. (And this is without their credit card mind you).

  2. Kroger comes in a close second. If you use the savings member card that Kroger offers you $0.10 off for every $100 you spend at Kroger. They also run regular double point incentives. This is very advantageous considering how many Krogers there are versus Costco. And of course the fact that you don’t need a membership to shop there or buy gas.

  3. AAA Fuel Finder can help you find where you cheapest gas is located. And their trip planner tool will help you plan any road trip around the most inexpensive gas routes.

Reminder Measles are on the rise

There have been a few ‘maybes’ in the Cypress area regarding measles at childcare facilities so I did want to once again share this flyer and link from Memorial Hermann.

I’ve added more camps to the Cypress Camp List

I compiled this list of 38 40 camps in the Cypress area for kids of all ages. I grabbed a little of this and that mixing in science, sports and art (of course). Give it a read here!

For all my new subscribers→ Need a recommendation for, well, everything?

There is (currently) 252 253 😅 businesses/ providers (and counting) on this list and I’m adding to it! You can access the list below for free and feel free to share it (not like it’s a secret or anything.)
