Happy October, Cypress! 🌲

The Boardwalk is glowing pink, the pumpkin spice is back, and somewhere on your to-do list there's an appointment you've been pushing to "next month" since about March. We see you.

Between school pickups, work, and everything else on the calendar, your own health tends to land last. So this month we rounded up the local places to get checked, give back, and find answers you can actually trust—free breast exams, free flu shots, a Saturday mammogram day right here in Cypress, and where to give blood without driving into town.

🌲 Get checked this month

Free breast exams, all October long

Harris County Public Health is offering free clinical breast exams at its clinics and mobile units throughout October, per the county's October announcement. If the provider recommends a mammogram, a patient navigator helps with the referral and scheduling.

One note so nobody's surprised: the exam is free, but the county isn't promising free mammograms.

To schedule: call 832-927-7350 and ask which location works best for you.

A Saturday option for your mammogram

Memorial Hermann Cypress is hosting Mammo Day on Saturday, October 17, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Breast Care Center, 27700 Northwest Freeway, Suite 140. No juggling it around a workday required.

  • Appointments are required.

  • Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and info about your last mammogram.

  • Per the hospital's September 24 announcement, screenings are billed to insurance and a cost share may apply.

  • You don't need a doctor's order for a screening mammogram, but you do need a provider who can receive your results.

  • Parking is free in the surface lots in front of and behind Medical Plaza 1.

This is for routine screening. If you've noticed a new breast symptom, call your doctor now rather than waiting for a Saturday.

A morning for the health questions you keep putting off

Breast care, pelvic and bladder health, menopause, and reproductive health are all on the agenda at Memorial Hermann Cypress's Women's Health Symposium on Saturday, October 24, at 27800 Northwest Freeway.

  • 9 a.m.: breakfast, networking, and resources

  • 9:30–10:30 a.m.: physician panel and Q&A

  • Blood pressure and glucose screenings before and after the program

Basically, bring the questions you've been Googling at 11 p.m. Registration is online.

Cost keeping you from getting checked?

The Rose provides breast health services for both insured and uninsured patients, and it encourages anyone worried about cost to reach out. Call 281-484-4708 to talk through scheduling and available assistance.

Its locations and mobile program serve the wider Houston region, so confirm where your appointment will be when you book.

🌲 Flu shots and blood drives

Put your flu shot on the October calendar

Harris County Public Health's new "Practice Community Immunity" campaign, announced October 1, includes free flu shots at county clinics and mobile events. You can walk in at a mobile health event or call 832-927-7350 for a clinic appointment. Check the event listing first, since services vary by stop.

The county recommends a seasonal flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older.

Give blood without leaving Cypress

Looking for a practical way to help local patients? Gulf Coast Blood's Cypress donor center is at 15050 Fairfield Village Square Drive, Suite 105. When we checked, its October 15 schedule had open appointments for whole-blood and automated donations.

Availability changes, so pick a time online and review donor eligibility before heading over. The blood center's locator also lists nearby mobile drives.

🌲 Respiratory watch

The less fun part: flu is starting its fall climb.

In the Texas Department of State Health Services report for September 20–26 (published October 2), statewide flu test positivity rose to 3.65%, up from 2.16% the week before. Overall flu-like illness activity is still rated "minimal."

  • Flu positivity: 3.65% ▲ (from 2.16%)

  • COVID-19 cases: 1,880, down 8.3% from 2,050 the week before

  • RSV positivity: 1.34%

  • Rhinovirus/enterovirus: 32.30%, the most common virus participating labs found (rhinovirus is the usual cause of the common cold)

These are statewide lab numbers, not Cypress infection rates. They tell you which way things are heading, not what's going around your kid's classroom. For county-level trends, Harris County keeps a respiratory virus dashboard.

🌲 Around town

Why the Boardwalk is glowing pink

The Boardwalk at Towne Lake is lighting up pink every evening in October, in partnership with Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center at Cypress. Along the waterfront, you can walk through breast cancer facts and resources as part of an educational walk.

The October 2 kickoff has passed, but the lights and the walk run all month. Good excuse for an evening stroll.

🌲 Reads worth saving

A few practical guides from local hospital experts. Save them for the next time you need them.

For sports parents

Houston Methodist's September 18 article covers concussion symptoms, what equipment can and can't prevent, and why a child should be evaluated after a concerning hit. A child doesn't have to lose consciousness to have a concussion.

For sick-day decisions

Texas Children's explains flu symptoms in kids, when to call the pediatrician, and which symptoms need emergency care.

For the fall sniffles

Memorial Hermann's seasonal guide covers common fall illnesses and allergy triggers, including ragweed and mold. It's general health education, not a report on what's circulating in Cypress right now.

And if this helped, share it with the neighbor who's also been putting off that appointment... we're not judging.
