Tropical Storm Edouard: What it means for Cypress
As of 9:00pm Monday night (as we are writing this), the storm system in the Gulf was upgraded to Tropical Storm Edouard. It's forecast to come ashore Tuesday afternoon between Galveston and Port Arthur.
For Cypress, this is a rain and flooding event. We are not in the tropical storm warning — that covers the coast from Port Bolivar east.
Harris County is under a Flood Watch.
Rain: 2 to 5 inches near I-45, with isolated 6 to 9 inches east of it. Cypress sits west of that line, so we should be on the lower end.
Timing: heaviest Tuesday through the evening, with more Wednesday.
Flash flooding is the real risk. Rain rates could top 3 to 4 inches an hour, enough to cover a road in minutes. Leave early. If a street is flooded, don’t risk it.
Schools: Several Houston-area districts closed for Tuesday. As of Monday night, CFISD said they will be business as usual. This could all change overnight, so make sure your check cfisd.net and their social accounts before you leave.

What happened last Friday on Sunlit Harbor
A woman was killed Friday morning in a shooting outside a home on the 7400 block of Sunlit Harbor Drive, here in Cypress. A man was critically injured. Harris County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Michael Ritchie said deputies were called just after 11 a.m. on Friday, August 28, and that investigators are treating it as a murder-suicide attempt. The couple has three children, who were at school at the time. Investigators haven't determined a reason. Learn More.

Huey Magoo's is coming to Barker Cypress
Chicken tender people, this one's for you.
A permit filed with the state on August 28 shows Huey Magoo's building out a 2,444-square-foot space at 11430 Barker Cypress Road, in the Barker Cypress Retail Center. 34 seats, a full commercial kitchen, and a $350,000 build. Construction is set to start September 1 and wrap November 1, though that's the construction date and not an opening date—figure a few more weeks after that for equipment, inspections, and hiring. The chain is Orlando-based, started in 2004, and built its whole identity on tenders cut from the tenderloin. They call it "the filet mignon of chicken," which is a lot of confidence to put on a menu board. Cypress will decide.
This is the first Harris County location we've seen filed, and the tenant on the permit is listed as one of the partners behind a 15-restaurant Houston-area deal signed back in April so this may not be the only one.
Two important Harris County budget dates
Harris County’s proposed fiscal year 2027 budget and tax rates are not final.
Commissioners Court is scheduled to discuss budget amendments and propose tax rates on Sept. 8. A public hearing and possible adoption of the budget and tax rates are scheduled for Sept. 17. Those votes will affect the county portion of local property-tax bills, as well as funding for roads, public safety, flood control and other services used by Cypress residents.
